passion for culture & color
A San Diego native, Diane Powers graduated with honors from San Diego State University with a B.A. in Design. Her passion for Latin American color and culture was born from extensive travels throughout Mexico, South, and Central America.
In 1968, she purchased renowned Ilse Ruocco’s design firm, setting the stage for a grand vision: a Mexican attraction combining cuisine, music, arts, crafts, landscape, and architecture. The result was the 1971 opening of Bazaar del Mundo in Old Town San Diego.
Over 35 years, it evolved into one of the most popular attractions in San Diego. Her creative approach touches every aspect of her business, from internal design and advertising concepts to weekly menu tastings and personal attention to customer feedback.
